To bring Amtrak to Mobile, the Mobile City Council would need to approve a $3 million budget over the course of three years with additional funding needed afterward to support operations.
“The formative part of it is that Amtrak, the contract which is really the funding mechanism of three point four eight million dollars,” Stimpson said. “The port authority is bringing it up at their board meeting to pay one third of it and they will do that this week. So we will have confirmation on that.”
While Stimpson said he believes Amtrak will boost the economy, council member Joel Daves of District 5 says the problem is not having another transportation system, it is not having the funds.
