The University of California system will no longer use SAT, ACT scores in admissions. The decision is part of a settlement of a student lawsuit that was announced Friday.

SAN FRANCISCO — The University of California won’t consider SAT and ACT scores that are submitted with admission and scholarship applications under a settlement of a student lawsuit that was announced Friday.

The 10-campus system, which has more than 280,000 students statewide, decided not to continue fighting a judge’s injunction issued last fall that barred it from considering the scores for admission even when they were submitted voluntarily, the San Francisco ChronicleActivists have long argued that standardized tests put minority and low-income students at a disadvantage. Critics say test questions often contain inherent bias that more privileged children are better equipped to answer.

That was the argument in a 2019 lawsuit filed against the UC system on behalf of some high school students and nonprofit groups., reached earlier this month, “ensures that the university will not revert to its planned use of the SAT and ACT — which its own regents have admitted are racist metrics,” Amanda Savage, an attorney representing the students, said in a statement reported by the Chronicle.

They take in to account social economic background and adjust the minimum GPA and SAT/ACT score such that the student body is representative of the overall population. Poor black kids are going up against other poor black kids, so the idea that the SAT is racist is ridiculous.

In 20 yrs, U.S. went from 3rd or 4th in educational attainment to 23rd, due to left wing demand to let everyone in to high school, lowering standards. U.S is no longer 1st choice of foreigners for technical education & we have fallen behind China & Russia in military technology

Oh these tests are too hard and the white and asian kids score really well (regardless of wealth BTW), so hey let's change the rules so us other minorities can get in without taking these damn hard tests!

These are the people who go to expensive Universities, then complain that they can't afford their student loans and want the tax payers to pay for it.

Nor GPA. Ex When golden state test were given to seniors our daughter got every award top of class yet bad gpa...no scolarship no college saying come to our school...brightest child in state overlooked.

Access to college will out support is not opportunity. Admissions is just one small step to a degree. The American k-12 system has failed and now it is leaking into colleges.

This will open the door for so many people.

Take away the bread of Palestinian house and then I defend myself, the guilty Palestinian too. Heargaza

One need only look at our current federal gov't in DC to know that stellar SAT scores couldn't possibly be a requirement to work in Congress or any other elected office. To my knowledge, former one-term president, dumbest man on the planet Trump never released his SAT scores.

Standardized testing for college entry will now consist of: Can they sign their name in cursive? Can they pass the same test immigrants take to become a U.S citizen? Can they write full sentences on paper using a pen/pencil?

Wow... While Texas is hard core on these testing system.

if police depts used the test they wouldnt employ social losers that are then given a badge, gun, keys to brand new cruiser and license to kill

No wonder we're losing to China.

absolutely! admission to school isn’t about education!

Just as long as students identify as smart, right ?

Woulda been nice when I applied. But still good news 😂😂😂
