United Airlines said it may shed almost half of its U.S. workforce, telling 36,000 employees they could be furloughed on Oct. 1 due to the pandemic

By Doug Cameron Close Doug Cameron Updated July 8, 2020 11:50 am ET United Airlines Holdings Inc. said it could be forced to shed almost half its U.S. workforce, telling 36,000 employees on Wednesday that they could be furloughed from Oct. 1 because of the pandemic-driven slump in passenger demand.

The airline is still burning through $40 million a day, the executive told reporters on Wednesday, adding that it could no longer count on a further round of government support to cover staff costs beyond Oct. 1. United employs 95,000 staff world-wide, and the potential furlough notices cover 45% of its domestic employees, though thousands have already taken buyouts in a program open through July 15. Unpaid leave and other offers also could ultimately reduce the number of involuntary cuts. Another United executive said the number of involuntary cuts required should be clearer by mid-August.

“The United Airlines projected furlough numbers are a gut punch, but they are also the most honest assessment we’ve seen on the state of the industry,” said Association of Flight Attendants-CWA President Sara Nelson in a statement.

LT_Misc Don't blame those that look at the data and use sound judgement, we've been trying to re-establish freedoms and allow the far less vulnerable to carry on with their lives. Lockdowns give no net benefit of lives saved in its current form. Cuomo Nursing Home policy is pure MURDER!

That is so sad.

Heartbreaking. 😞

INSTEAD OF SHEDDING EMPLOYEES, SHOW ANY ALTERNATIVE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN SIMILAR SECTOR TO IMPLEMENT THEIR SKILLS, TALENT, EXPERIENCE. SOME SECTORS OF NECESSITIES, COMFORTS, FARMING, SUPPLY CHAIN,CONNECTIVITY, TECHNOLOGY, COMMUNICATION MAY FLOURISH DUE TO CHANGE IN DEMAND.

How about we just end stock buybacks?

Something tells me unitedairlines flight attendants aren’t seeing the corolation between mask wearing/COVID precautions and their company’s/our country’s well being 😳

Congradulations, Corporations thrive on govt bailout Employees get rugged individualism

And what did they do with all the federal money they took?

*Due to the govt stupidity of lockdowns and fear mongering Fixed it for ya

Our data shows US consumer air travel spend for the industry & United. The longer coronavirus lingers, the bigger hole the industry will have to dig out of.

Because assholes refuse to WearADamnMask .

Didn’t they receive a bailout ? What was the point ?

That is not very friendly....

Not a surprise

All because we need to slow the spread of a virus from which 99%+ will recover.

So maybe we should stop shelling out billions to companies who are going to fire people anyway and just give that money to the people yang
