About 40,000 workers in the airline industry are facing layoffs on Thursday unless Congress comes up with another aid package. Since the pandemic hit, thousands of workers have been getting at least partial pay. But it runs out on Thursday.

FILE - In this May 24, 2020, file photo, a Southwest Airlines flight attendant prepares a plane bound for Orlando, Fla. for takeoff at Kansas City International airport in Kansas City, Mo. About 40,000 workers in the airline industry are facing layoffs on Thursday, Oct. 1, unless Congress comes up with another aid package. In a few days, he’ll be among roughly 40,000 airline workers whose jobs are likely to evaporate in an industry decimated by the coronavirus pandemic.

“To my understanding, this is the steepest demand shock for commercial aviation in human history,” said Morningstar aviation analyst Burkett Huey. “Knowing that I may not have insurance benefits, I feel like I have failed,” she said on a conference call set up by the Machinists Union. “I’m the primary breadwinner in this family.”

Then came the pandemic. Overtime went away. Uhatafe and his wife cut expenses and staggered their shifts so one could stay home to supervise remote learning for two sons and a niece. With early retirements and other incentives to quit, U.S. airlines have already shed about 45,000 jobs during the pandemic, or 48,000 including cargo carriers. Government figures are only available through July, however.

Why should we mail them out? Hundreds of thousands in other industries are furloughed! What this industry? SpeakerPelosi senatemajldr No MORE BAILOUTS FOR AIRLINES.

I’m sorry, but airline workers deserve no more sympathy than anybody else whose career has crashed in this pandemic. There are countless people who have been furloughed or laid off for six months, but now that it’s airline workers, it’s a huge crisis.

RIP

Maybe if the airlines gave me something to eat on a flight in coach, I'd fly somewhere. As far as I'm concerned, what goes around comes around.

If airlines want to get back in business, they need to begin offering 'Masks Optional' flights for those of us whom truly want to travel yet aren't brainwashed and don't want to hassle with their nazi virtue signaling BS

When does everything think we will be able to travel the friendly skys again like the past? Other countries are shutting down again. Does everyone still think travel will ever be the same. Will flyers ever feel safe again. Whew. Rambling thoughts on our future.

How long does anyone thing an aircraft can be left standing before its going to cost big $ to put it back into service? How much bailout money is left in the American tax coffers to pay this again? and then in 3 months, again and so on.

So the government money lasted precisely until the end of the program? The government calculated the amount and gave the airlines exact change? How uncharacteristically efficient... or maybe there’s a scam.

Spend cash on hand. Go to the equity or lending markets that you are Very familiar with. Chop executive pay. Suck it up buttercup.

Give it up to thiefs and criminals who have already determined the 40,000 are toast anyway. But as half of Congress is already bidding up shares on additional bailout $$ forthcoming, it's a done deal.

40,000 votes for Ole Joe!

Every single industry is taking a hit & the airlines should be no different. Get the billions back that have been stolen illegally buy small and very large corporations. The pandemic is real and endless corporate bailouts are unrealistic!

lookner Oops nope. They already got their bailout that they shouldn't have gotten in the first place. The people need it not the corporations. Should have managed their money better.

TeresaMWalker Oh no! My son manages air traffic controllers. Will check with him tomorrow. Lifting all of those in the airline industry in my prayers. Go away Covid.

Let me call these fake politicians out on the covid-19. They say if someone has AIDS they don't have to tell their partner or partners that they have AIDS so they can spread it around. Over 25% of AIDS patients will die. Every year you have it your odds of living go down. FAKE

when you see what the 1ST BAILOUT was actually spent on.......

Every industry will be affected by this unless we get a vaccine. I feel sorry for anyone that has lost a love one or job because of this pandemic.

It would be insane to bail out the air line industry when other Americans are still waiting for more help!!

And another package and another then another. Where do people think this money is actually coming from?

No bailout. Remove all board members and start over without reckless actions to boost stock price.

Sorry, gop Senate is too busy ramming through a SCOTUS against the wishes of about 80% of Americans so you know... screw you America. GOPHypocrisy GOPBetrayedAmerica

No more bail outs!

No bail out money, if needed they can get a loan and pay it back

America is a such a fucking narrow minded, ShitHoleCountry it's disgusting AND deadly! Like...pain? We haven't seen anything yet!!!

It’s a free market, right? Let those businesses fail, or figure out their own way to make their business succeed. Have the executives take a pay cut. Why does the government always have to bail out big corporations that don’t even pay their share in taxes?.?

Thats what stock buy backs and huge corporate bonuses get you.

No more bailouts, unless it’s cash money in the hands of citizens.

JamarlinMartin Let them fail.

Air lines don't need to be bailed out.

Yeah blame that on democrats restrictions

Oh well, they should use the baggage fees they collect...no bailout...

Everyone else in America got laid off 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yeah and financial institutions (banks) don't care - they want their mortgage, rent, and loan payments. Banks do not care. What do they do with that money anyway when money isn't really moving around?

A bailout for a taxpayer stake only.

sorry americans, trump is busy breaking the law, not paying taxes, and doing everything he can to stay out of prison, and please his handlers by forcing a religious psycho into scotus. he doesn’t have time for the peons who are losing everything

Senate too busy pushing a judge through weeks before the election.

And then there's the rest of the country.

Thanks Nancy- signed airline workers.

Time to talk about nationalizing the airline industry. Tax payers have bailed them out enough. Interstate commerce requires air travel so it’s time to discuss removing the failed private sector.

My PPP loan ran out months ago. What's so special about airlines?

But the Senate has to rush to judges. They don't care about 40,000 jobs they have to control all the uteri.

Why with the billions they used to buy back stocks. They won’t pay people but will still have record profits.

Do something Republicans 😡😡😡

Weren't they asking for 20 billion? That's enough to give every one of those 40k employees $500,000. Gimme a break!

Airlines can't sell some stocks and have the shareholders bear the burden of their obsoleted business model of cramming airplanes full and nickel and diming their customers for all they can?

Thank Nancy Pelosi and her special interest groups.

Airline companies are holding their employees hostage to extort congress for money. Let them fail
