EU will focus on not weakening the bloc and keeping European Council unified on providing Ukraine candidacy status, says French presidential official as some eastern European member nations press for strong message to Russia

European Union flags fly outside the European Commission headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, April 10, 2019.

The European Commission, the bloc's executive arm, will give its opinion on Ukraine's candidacy request on June 17, with the bloc's heads of state expected to discuss it at a summit a week later. Even if approved, the process to become a full member takes several years and can be vetoed by any member state.

"We know that there are different sensitivities on the subject within the European Union," the French presidential source told reporters on Friday. Three European diplomats said the most likely scenario was that the Commission, which will also give recommendations for Moldova and Georgia, would give its green light, possibly with conditions.

Ban on New Fossil Fuel Cars by 2035 Approved by EU ParliamentLawmakers at the European Parliament approved a measure to support the ban on sales of petrol and diesel cars by the year 2035 as the bloc doubles down on its green agenda. What I want to see is where they will get so much energy for all these meaningless replaceables. Where are people going to charge their cars for hours on end if they have no garage? So, no gas, diesel, guns or private lands? Back to serfdom it is

UK participation in €100-billion EU research programme hangs in the balanceUK researchers fear they will be locked out of the flagship science programme if negotiations fail. 1/ The awful thing is that the EU_Commission SHOULD exclude the UK even though it and EU scientists want its participation in HorizonEU. States that threaten to breach international treaties with the EU are NOT to be trusted to enter new agreements in good faith. Switzerland is not, as you say, a 'participant' in Horizon Europe. It is currently more remote from associtation than the UK, and treated as a non-associated third country. Researchers in Switzerland can't apply as though Switzerland were associated; researchers in the UK can.
