British farmers fear Boris Johnson has 'terrifying' plans to abandon UK food standards in order to win a Brexit trade deal with Trump

The head of Britain's farmers fears the UK government has "pretty terrifying" plans to ditch UK food standards in order to win a Brexit trade deal with Trump.

Eustice, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, insisted that the UK government would not accept lower food standards after Brexit, telling Batters: "You have got those assurances — they're in the manifesto."However, NFU President Minette Batters said the industry wanted more concrete assurances, and pointed toto add legal safeguards for British food standards in a key piece of legislation called the Agriculture Bill.

"This feels like the battleground of Brexit. We've had successive warm words in this area but no actual commitment," Batters told Eustice. Eustice sought to reassure the conference that Johnson's government would stick to previous verbal promises on food standards.

It's obvious! With a huge amount of American farmers going out of business Trumps base is shrinking! Getting access to the UK market will help a little and can be spun as a huge win. Johnson on the otherhand won't have many options if he continues on the current path 🤷‍♂️
