U.K. Royal Air Force Takes Sides in the Military’s Battle of the Beard

British airmen can begin growing full beards, but fastidious objectors believe a clean face says, ‘I am now shaved, and I am ready for war.’ A pioneer axe is handed to a Pioneer Sergeant, right, one of the few ranks in the British army allowed beards.

I've never served in the military, but I am sufficiently familiar with the use of particulate and gas respirators to know that getting an adequate fit on a respirator requires a good seal with the face - and that's not possible for a male with a beard.

Hate to say it guys but the photo you show on this is British Infantry. The Bn Pioneer Sgt has to grow a beard - not an option.

Shame On The Shaved.

Or more importantly, a bearded face screams, “ I am a bearded face, and I am going to die because I can’t get a proper seal around my gas mask.”

Canon fodder does not need to be clean shaven, just be prepared to die for a country that couldn't give a f**k about them or their family

The practical reason for not allowing beards is that the soldiers can’t get a good airtight seal when wearing gas masks. Esthetically speaking a clean shaven soldier simply looks better, more valiant and brave, more trustworthy even.

Is there a war planned today? No? Then let them have their stupid beards. There will be time to shave when a war starts.

The British army needs to move into the present day. This is not troops moving North with the Earl of Surrey, Thomas Howard Senior, in charge of the Army of Henry, the 8th of such name

Since most soldiers are ordered to the Middle East, beards are de rigueur.
