Former President Donald Trump returned to the Hawkeye State this week greeting voters not from the stage of one of his outsized political rallies, but in a smaller venue for more personal interaction with Iowa’s Republican voters.

Mr. Trump, the leading GOP candidate in Iowa and nationally, addressed a crowd of about 180 people packed into the Machine Shed restaurant Thursday, delivering remarks on his plans for a second White House term and answering half a dozen questions from the crowd.

But Iowa is known for last-minute shifts, and the caucuses are eight months away. Mr. Trump placed second here in 2016 to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who won in part because of his months of intensive retail politicking. “When you go to a Trump rally, he’s the guy up on the stage, and on the big screen,” Brad Boustead, one of the organizers of the event, told The Washington Times.

The club has already hosted several GOP presidential candidates, including Mr. Trump’s former vice president, Mike Pence, who plans to announce his White House bid next week.
