Former President Donald Trump is weighing a trip to Washington, D.C., in the middle of his campaign trail.
One source told the Hill that a trip could happen as soon as Tuesday, while another source claimed there is no current plan with any dates in consideration. The House of Representatives hasn't had a speaker since Rep. Kevin McCarthy was voted out on Tuesday. On Trump's docket is a trip to Iowa over the weekend and a stop in New Hampshire on Monday to rally support for his presidential campaign. This week, he was in New York to appear for a fraud trial against him.Rep.
Trump has not confirmed or denied his willingness to serve as speaker. Additionally, he hasn't endorsed anyone for the position. When McCarthy was scrambling for votes in his favor for the speakership in January, Rep. Matt Gaetz , who initially filed the motion that ultimately vacated him over nine months later, wrote in Trump's name as his vote.The former president has not been to Capitol Hill since Jan. 6, 2021, when Congress was slated to certify the 2020 election, which Trump lost to President Joe Biden.
Rep. Jim Jordan has expressed interest in becoming McCarthy's replacement, along with House Majority Leader Steve Scalise .
