WARNING! Spoilers ahead for Transformers #1The Energon Universe era of Transformers has officially begun, and new writer/artist Daniel Warren Johnson is bringing a new dimension to the franchise's robot-on-robot violence. Using some technically sound professional wrestling maneuvers, Optimus Prime absolutely owns the Decepticon Starscream, setting a precedent in the first issue of the new series for a fresh take on Cybertronian combat.

Immediately picking up their fight where they left off centuries ago, Optimus Prime subdues Starscream with moves straight out of writer/artist Daniel Warren Johnson's Eisner-winning series Do A Powerbomb!Daniel Warren Johnson Brings A New Flair To Transformer Fight Scenes Transformers #1 starts things off with the arrival of Jetfire on Earth, who initiates an earthquake to uncover the Ark, the crashed spaceship containing members of the Autobots and Decepticons.

Johnson Has An Award-Winning Pedigree In Wrestling Comics Do A Powerbomb! told the story of a legacy wrestler who finds herself transported to another dimension and compete in the ring to bring her deceased mother back to life. Johnson depicted the in-ring action with the blistering, manga-influenced style he’s become famous for, and the cartoonist brings the same deft touch to the action in Transformers #1.

The moves are not just limited to Optimus, either, as there’s a moment when Starscream cashes his receipt by placing the Autobot leader in a rear chinlock. Given that Johnson has already provided a variant cover for the issue featuring Optimus Prime showing off his moves on the basketball court, it’s clearthe writer/artist is pulling from various sources with his new take on Transformers.
