WYOMING, Ohio -
Hazmat crews told residents that they could return home and that no hazardous materials leaked from any derailed cars. Residents were originally told to 'shelter in place' because they were unsure of what might have leaked, but families are now able to freely leave their shelters. The only substance know to have leaked from the train at this time is a non hazardous and non flammable white plastic pellet called 'Hop Flake' powder.Units were on the scene and crews started an evacuation of one block to the north and two blocks to the south of Wyoming Avenue. The Lockland and Wyoming Fire Departments evacuated 500 feet from the tracks.
CSX was on site and handled cleanup. It hoped to have the site cleared in the 12 hours, according to an update from the City of Wyoming Facebook page. The EMA and Hazmat were also on site. The Lockland Assistant Fire Chief Josh Blum said the clean up will be an 'extensive operation.' Blum also stated that no one was injured.
