Earle emphasized the importance of recognizing humanity’s responsibility to protect nature and address the serious threats posed to our delicate ecosystem by climate change. “Think about how we're disrupting the cycles through what we're putting into the ocean, changing the chemistry of the ocean, warming the ocean. That changes basically the nature of everything,” Earle said. “We're seeing the rising temperature having an impact on increased storms of intensity and frequency.

Earle, who in her lifetime has been able to witness and be part of the greatest era of ocean discovery, pointed out how lucky we are to be living in a time where we have the knowledge and science to understand what is happening to our planet, and therefore what can be done to save it. She said, “We are connected inextricably to the rest of life on earth. We're the only creatures who can see and understand that.

One strategy Earle and her organization Mission Blue have implemented as a way to protect the ocean is the identification and championing of “”—special places that are scientifically identified as critical to the health of the ocean. “These special places are similar to national parks and wildlife sanctuaries on the land, but now we must do the same thing in the ocean. We need places where fish can do what it takes to make more fish.
