Delays, COVID-19, streaming competition and unforeseen circumstances drive down average prime time TV viewership to 15.5 million.

NBC averaged 15.5 million viewers according to Nielsen prime time telecast data, a record low for an Olympics on the network that has carried the Summer Games since 1988.

The Tokyo audience declined 41% from the 2016 Summer Games in Rio. Since 2016, competition for viewers has grown exponentially with the addition of new streaming platforms, which have cut into the numbers for NBC drew a large online audience, with consumers streaming more than 6 billion minutes of coverage over the NBC Olympics app, its Peacock platform, and through its social media partners such as YouTube and TikTok.NBC parent Comcast was counting on the Olympics to help boost Peacock, the streaming service the company launched last year.

Faced with disappointing numbers, NBC was forced to tout the relative strength of the Tokyo Games, noting that viewership is in the range of “Sunday Night Football,” the most-watched program in prime time. There was a yearlong postponement, and a threat of cancellation loomed as Japan continues to struggle with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Based on how sports ratings suffered in the U.S. when teams played in empty arenas and stadiums during 2020, the lack of fans in the stands in Tokyo could not have helped. Even under optimal circumstances, a 13-hour time zone difference makes it nearly impossible to avoid learning the results of events that happen while most of the U.S. is asleep.Advertisementa charismatic American sprinter, lost her spot on the team after testing positive for marijuana.

And wait until NBC televises the communist winter games in Beijing, brought to you by the communist/slave labor apologist of Nike, the NBA and Coca-Cola. Nobody's watching that but the woke.

Wehrl That's because Leslie Jones covered it best.

I think it says more about Brie NBC coverage than the event itself. It was very thought to follow.

Get Woke, go broke. Wokeness destroys everything it touches. Did nbc not figure out that the Woke are a tiny percentage of the actual population, but being Woke will turn off most of the population?

NBC did a bad job of it. Disjointed coverage. But it's also because of the time difference.

Meanwhile, IOC says that sports popular among young audiences like skateboarding, surfing and climbing might be discontinued after Paris. The entitlement of these out of touch people! Talk about shooting themselves on the foot.

I watched every event from the replays on Twitter. That way I didn’t have to hear all the excuses about missing drug test, mental issues, etc etc. Just wanted to focus on sport!

I enjoyed them. But the lack of fans definitely took away from the experience.

A mandate for skimpier beach volleyball outfits should fix the ratings issue for the next one.

Maybe cuz most events were between 10pm and 7am on the east coast

The 'beautiful' post-WWII world has ended.

maybe that whole nonconsensual thing was a bit much what with SARSCoV2 and all

Too bad. The competitions were outstanding.

NBC Draws Its Lowest Summer Olympics Ratings Ever for Tokyo GamesNBC drew an average of 15.5 million prime-time viewers for the Tokyo Olympics, the lowest audience for the Summer Games since the network started broadcasting them in 1988 Also: NBC’s 4K broadcast looked muted & over processed. Commentators were not engaging. Camerawork/presentation/technology felt not illustrative of our country’s energy - or this era. It was all…stodgy. In a time when viewers desperately need ‘oomph.’ NBCUniversal did not do a great job, in my opinion. Too many feel good stories leaves little room for athletic competition I seldom see. So I got tired of all those and just turn channel. Also to much Toyota
