NBC drew an average of 15.5 million prime-time viewers for the Tokyo Olympics, the lowest audience for the Summer Games since the network started broadcasting them in 1988

Olympic athletes like Caeleb Dressel, Suni Lee, and Sydney McLaughlin helped the U.S. win the most gold medals at the Tokyo Summer Games. For Comcast Corp.’s NBCUniversal, however, the size of the audience that watched was underwhelming.drew an average of 15.5 million prime-time viewers over their 17-day run, the company said, the lowest audience for the Summer Games since NBC started broadcasting them in 1988 and a 42% decline from the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016.

“When you look at the numbers in general and the impact that Covid has had on sports, we were prepared for these numbers,” said NBC Sports Chairman Pete Bevacqua. “For better or worse, I really do believe the pandemic and postponement impacted these games.” Still, he noted, NBC’s telecasts dominated the TV landscape night after night.

Mr. Bevacqua said the Tokyo Games “will be very, very profitable for NBCUniversal despite the challenges from the pandemic.”

Come on now ... NBC just got the 'twisties'!

I understand the time difference contributed to this; Covid (without the crowds); IOC making poor decisions, subscribing to a streaming service when games in the past aired on broadcast tv.

How about their horrible coverage of sport climbing? Indeed of focusing on people climbing they zoom in on people cleaning holds who were not even climbing. They also didn’t show the men’s climbing on television, only the women because they wanted to show off their skimpy attire

They been doing this forever

I watched about 30 minutes of the Olympics. I couldn’t tell you the name of anybody who won a gold medal. The Olympics are dead to me.

Lowest Olympics ratings ever? Well when you lock Men’s Basketball behind a NBC/Peacock paywall, you’re not doing your ratings any favors

Why anyone would watch anything but CBC coverage, where it’s available, is utterly beyond me.

They can use whatever excuse they want, but the reality is that people are tired of their woke bullshit.

Maybe people are actually getting fed up with the IOC turning a blind eye to all the evidence of doping! “Russian Olympic Committee.” What a joke. 50 years of cheating and they are still allowed to compete. Whatever.

Breaking: consumers don’t understand that multiple live events cannot be covered simultaneously.

It was by far the most horrid Olympics I have watched. NBC really dropped the ball on this one. Damn shame...i heard there were a lot of great moments, but all i basically got to watch was beach volleyball and canoes....

I agree it was poorly covered.

NBCOlympics their fragmented videos gave away the winner with the titles as well. You had to pick your events and build your stream. I don’t have time for that shit. Just stream the GD olympics.

Too many feel good stories leaves little room for athletic competition I seldom see. So I got tired of all those and just turn channel. Also to much Toyota

NBCUniversal did not do a great job, in my opinion.

Also: NBC’s 4K broadcast looked muted & over processed. Commentators were not engaging. Camerawork/presentation/technology felt not illustrative of our country’s energy - or this era. It was all…stodgy. In a time when viewers desperately need ‘oomph.’

NBC presses on after rough start in transitional OlympicsIt was a transitional Olympics for NBC as people change their viewing habits. NBC's prime-time audience on many nights was half what it was in Rio de Janeiro five years ago. But more people are streaming the Games and following highlight clips. Considering USA hates their own country and having men competing in women’s sports. Olympics wasn’t on the radar We changed our viewing habits because there was very little on offer. Events were not offered in any holistic viewing framework: it was like, the Americans, commentary, human interest background, scores. I have no idea who else competed. Absolutely awful. I thought NBCOlympics did a great job telecasting the Olympics this year in both television and streaming formats. It was wonderful to see the athletes, their competitiveness, pride and sportsmanship….
