San Antonio companies and social media influencers say a threatened ban would harm their businesses

The clock is ticking on TikTok. The official position in Washington is that Chinese -based ByteDance, the social media platform’s owner, represents a dual threat to American security because of data privacy concerns and the propagandistic potential of the platform. In response, Congress passed a law that was signed April 24 by President Biden requiring a sale of the American side of the business to a non- Chinese owner by Jan. 19. Failing that, Bytedance ’s popular app will be blocked in the U.S.

On the other hand, powerful companies like Meta , Snap , and Alphabet would be logical beneficiaries of the ban and might be happy to see it knocked out to their platforms’ benefit.
