Paul Beck, a political scientist at Ohio State University, said all of DeWine’s opponents had flaws. Renacci, he said, “may not be a very good candidate,” noting he lost to Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown in 2018 despite Brown’s vulnerability that year. , while attractive to some, likely turned off a lot more voters. “He’s not somebody who is going to mobilize more than a small base within the Republican Party,” Beck said.
