Brown/Getty Images Um, well, I do not know how to break this news delicately to you, or if a gentle approach would even appeal to your news-hardened brain, so here it is: The New Yorker has suspended staff writer Jeffrey Toobin after an unfortunate and mysterious Zoom Dick Incident . According to Motherboard, Toobin exposed himself to various New Yorker colleagues and WNYC employees during a video call last week.
Toobin maintains he only got his penis out by accident, telling Motherboard, “I believed I was not visible on Zoom. I thought no one on the Zoom call could see me. I thought I had muted the Zoom video call.” Other than Toobin’s apparent confirmation that he did indeed somehow get his penis out, very few concrete details about the ZDI have emerged: The New Yorker says it has suspended Toobin pending investigation, and according to Motherboard, his email has been disabled, and his Twitter, dark since October 13. Save for a CNN appearance on Saturday, things on the Toobin front seem quiet.
Silence is fertile breeding ground for speculation, though. On the one hand, the pandemic has created a strange new brand of home office in which we may all dress for the workplace as we see fit, which for some people, means not at all. The illusion of comfort has created some high-profile, near-nude SNAFUs — recall that ABC News reporter who appeared on Good Morning America wearing a suit, tie, and no pants, for example, or the woman who peed during a Zoom call.
Anyway, absent firm information as to how, exactly, an accident of this nature occurred, Toobin’s industry is ablaze with commentary. “Zoom Dick” is currently trending on Twitter.
