The Diamond Valley Lake in Riverside County is the major drinking water storage facility for 18 million Southern Californians. It is also an insurance policy against dry times.

As the San Joaquin Valley braces for yet another season of drought, some growers are openly questioning the future of farming here.

The Metropolitan Water District’s 21-year-old reservoir holds enough drinking water to meet the region’s emergency needs. The withdrawals have caused the surface water level to drop a few feet, leaving a bathtub-style ring around the reservoir’s 20 miles of shoreline. Construction work at the Diamond Valley Lake site — the largest earthen dam project in the U.S. — began in 1995.

U.S. appeals court puts on hold overturning of California assault weapon banA three-judge panel in the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a stay of U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez's June 4 order, after California officials had appealed the federal judge's decision to strike down the ban on assault-style weapons. California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who had appealed against the decision to overturn the ban, said the state's assault weapons laws would remain in effect while appellate proceedings continue. Benitez, of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, had overturned the ban, describing it as a 'failed experiment' and prompting scathing criticism from the state's governor and attorney general.
