“For youth like me, we don’t think too far ahead. We just wanna make it to the next day.”

Trevon Bosley’s 18-year-old brotheras he unloaded equipment outside of the Lights of Zion Missionary Bible Church. After his brother was killed, Bosley says he didn’t see himself living past his teen years. “I didn’t expect to make it to 18,” he says. “I felt like I wouldn’t make it farther than my brother did.” Bosley, who grew up in Chicago, says seeing the reality of gun violence in his own community and family made his dreams smaller. “Kids dream of becoming firefighters,” he says.

“I always fear for my life. I fear going to church. I fear going to school. I’m scared of the police.”Bosley wishes people knew that the effects of gun violence ripple farther than the person who was shot and the person who shot them. His own family isn’t the same as it was before, he says. His family stopped celebrating holidays because they couldn’t bear to celebrate without his brother.
