The TPWD data is available on a county level so that users can inspect species with documented or likely habitats in specific counties. TPWD’s target audience for the county-level data are planners and developers looking to build in areas that may be crucial habitats to threatened species.

Harris County is home to 88 rare, threatened and endangered species."It's incumbent upon the state to have an actual crime they think he's committed. Of the 88, 12 are native to, and only found in, Texas. There are ten endangered and 19 threatened species that are found — or, in the case of whales on the list below, have the potential to be found — in Harris County. Endangered and threatened species are provided legal protection under federal and state laws because they are at greatest risk of extinction or extirpation, a term meaning local instead of global loss. "You don't have to have criminal charges filed against you," said Beavers. The rest of the 59 species on the Harris County list are considered Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN), animals and plants that are declining or in need of protection and rehabilitation in order to prevent further loss. Advertisement "They’re nervous and scared," said King.

SGCN receive extra conservation resources from the Texas Conservation Action Plan. Most of the species considered endangered and threatened are also considered SGCN. "We have proof that he told officers that a known drug dealer paid him to come to Houston to buy the dope," Beavers explained. In addition to these broader categories (endangered, threatened and SGCN), each species is given a more granular ranking to indicate the severity of the threat to the species. These rankings range from level 1 – “critically imperiled” and at very high risk – to level 5 – “secure” and at low immediate risk. Though level 5 species are not in immediate risk of extinction, state and federal governments still monitor them because generalized loss of habitat, for example decreased water supplies, mean that the species could be at risk for future population decline.C.
