The highways and roads that shape our cities were often intentionally built at the expense of Black, Latino and other minority Americans. Here's how that still hurts communities of color today. ⬇️

Cars on the Southern State Parkway in Nassau County, circa 1960. The urban planner Robert Moses, according to biographers, designed the road so that bridges were low enough to keep buses — which would likely be carrying poor minorities — from passing underneath on the route from New York City to Long Island's beaches.Cars on the Southern State Parkway in Nassau County, circa 1960.

Robert Bullard, a professor of urban planning and environmental policy at Texas Southern University, says race has played a central role in how cities across America developed - and in how they continue to grow.Plessy v. Ferguson While the court would eventually come to reject the"separate but equal" doctrine enshrined by the case starting in the 1950's, Bullard says even today, not all transportation is created equal. Instead, cities often base plans for bus routes, highways and other infrastructure on a premise that some communities have more worth than others.

Some progress has been made as laws have changed around practices like housing segregation, but Bullard says minorities are often still excluded from planning decisions. He calls the dynamic at play"highway robbery," wherein minorities pay taxes at the same rates as white Americans, but those dollars then subsidize racist patterns of development.

I don’t understand how this happens when most of these cities have been controlled by Democrats for 50 years or more. Is it still happening? If so, where?

Oh bull shit. NPR is lying. Why don’t we pull some photo of that period. There was no salvery.

Time to defund NPR. Why are we funding the enemy?

Remember, for most of the 20th century, the city was overwhelmingly white. Jones Beach State Park was built in the 1920s, when African-Americans were only 3% of the city’s population. As late as 1945, there were only 13,000 Puerto Ricans in New York City.

In reality, all the pools were heated, and there is no evidence that Moses’ pools were segregated. Period photos show integrated swimming, and Moses specifically sought black lifeguards for the city’s beaches and pools.

This is insane. It's like the media are doing everything they can to cause discourse.

NPR BASTARDIZING HISTORY.

I hate to break it to NPR but there were and are also poor areas and poor urban areas that have plenty of white people living in them as well.

NPR, you have clearly developed a dependency on minority victimhood narrative. You must first admit your addiction before you can overcome it. We are here to help. (Not really.)

😂😂😂 keep reaching you sound more foolish with each headline.

We can follow the example of Boston’s Big Dig by putting a lot of these ugly highways (that cut across neighborhoods) deep underground and reclaiming the surface streets for parks and community activities.

People who build roads earns lot of dollars. Ask any immigrant and he is happy to earn so much money, they are grateful!

And the democrats knew how to abuse people and how to oppress them. They still are doing it to this day
