What’s clear is that the fight will have to keep shifting, said Raj Panjabi, the coordinator for the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative.Shortly after the coronavirus began to spread, the World Health Organization warned that pandemic-related disruptions to care could double malaria’s death toll in 2020. That nightmare scenario didn’t happen, though it will take time to untangle how many more malaria deaths the pandemic did cause.

Algeria, Argentina, El Salvador, Paraguay and Uzbekistan were declared malaria-free most recently.
