Jim Kinard has run every iteration of the Columbus Marathon since 1980, the longest active streak in race history. But he has slowed down and sticks to the half marathons these days. He already holds the Columbus Marathon record. Not for speed, but for its counterparts: distance over time. He is the only person to have toed the starting line every year of the race’s existence since 1980.
A native West Texan, Kinard moved to Columbus in 1972. He taught accounting at Ohio State University. Two years later, he was swept up in the. At first he could hardly finish laps around a standard, quarter-mile track without walking breaks. But he built up his distance, year over year. At his fastest, Kinard finished the Boston Marathon around 1983 at 3 hours and 6 minutes. That’s a tad slower than a 7-minute mile average. He’s a nine-time finisher of running’s most revered event, accessible only to those who can meet its challenging qualifying time requirements. And that’s on top of the more than 1,000 miles raced around the streets of Columbus, to say nothing of training jogs.“‘Running’ is a description I don’t think is appropriate anymore,” he said.
