And to think her performance almost didn’t happen at all., after the scene was shot and completed, she requested one more take. “You could kind of feel everybody groan because it’s such an elaborate scene with so much background, and we had a long day at the airport to shoot—we shot all the airport stuff that day,” Gilpin said.
“Acting on camera can really feel like the strangest thing. You’re doing this really vulnerable, somewhat embarrassing, weird thing among a hundred other people whose jobs involve math and heavy lifting and counting and science,” she said. “It can often feel like you’re trying to give birth in an SAT workroom. Or, like, asking to bring yourself to orgasm in a lab.
“I think Debbie kind of uses Ruth as a charging station to feel like she has control in her life, and has cast Ruth in her brain as a supporting character in Debbie’s story. Where Ruth is finally saying in this scene, I don’t want what you want. I’m not a supporting player in your story. I have to be the protagonist in my own,” Gilpin explained.
