"Our hearts are heavy today as we let you all know that our beloved German Shepherd, Champ, passed away peacefully at home," the Bidens said in anwhich they shared on Instagram alongside a handsome photo of the dog. "He was our constant, cherished companion during the last 13 years and was adored by the entire Biden family."
“Even as Champ’s strength waned in his last months, when we came into a room, he would immediately pull himself up, his tail always wagging, and nuzzle us for an ear scratch or a belly rub,” they continued. Champ was the ultimate companion and was by their side for plenty of monumental occasions. The Bidens adopted Champ in 2008 and he lived and worked alongside the president when he served as VP to President Obama. In 2018, the Bidens adopted Major, another German Shepherd, and the two eventually came to live in the White House.
“In our most joyful moments and in our most grief-stricken days, he was there with us, sensitive to our every unspoken feeling and emotion," the Bidens said of their pet. "We love our sweet, good boy and will miss him always." We’re not crying, you’re crying! We’re sending our thoughts and best wishes to the Biden family as they mourn the loss of the First Dog.
