GARDENING: Instead of throwing away orange and grapefruit seeds, AP gardening writer Lee Reich suggests planting them. Growing a citrus tree from a seed is no more difficult than growing a bean plant from seed, he says.

This undated photo shows a grapefruit and its seeds in New Paltz, N.Y. Citrus seeds are very easy to sprout and grow into beautiful houseplants — and perhaps yield delectable fruits.

Growing an orange tree — or any citrus tree — from a seed is no more difficult than growing a bean plant from seed. In fact, tangerine seedlings have shared a pot with a houseplant near my rocking chair, evidently “planted” casually as someone ate the fruit while sitting in the chair. And it’s not unusual to find an overenthusiastic grapefruit seed sprouting while still inside the fruit. There’s only one secret to growing citrus from seed: Don’t let the seed dry out.

A tree grown from seed will bear fruits different from — and probably worse — than the tree that bore the fruits that bore the seeds. That’s because plants grown from seeds, in contrast to plants propagated by grafting or cuttings from stems, leaves, and roots, represent the commingling and shuffling around of genes of the parent tree and whatever other variety pollinated the flower that preceded the fruit.

That's a great idea

If you plant any U.S. republican senator you'll get fungus. Lots and lots of mushrooms.

I like that you assume that I'm even capable of growing a bean plant.

You think I’m planting been plants?

Takes way too long

OMG! this is the beauty of the BASICS, and because it's basic WE ALL SEEM TO HAVE FORGOTTEN ABOUT IT!! This proves it, THE MORE WE KNOW, THE LEAST WE UNDERSTAND!!!!

question, if you have an orange that is from a grafted tree, won't you get the seed of the tree it was grafted to? For example, when you plant a apple seed? Just curious, not sure.
