Texas Rangers GM Chris Young on the pitching staff: ‘I believe in the group’

“The group we have is the group we have,” Young said. “I said this three weeks ago. Nothing has changed. This is a very similar group to the one we had in the rotation when we took off. So, I’m very optimistic. I believe in the group and I think you should, too.”, Jon Gray, Andrew Heaney, Dane Dunning and Bradford – have pitched well this spring. In particular this spring, they have all thrown strikes and limited walks.

Both of those concerns were on display Saturday in Bradford’s start against Arizona, the team the Rangers faced in last year’s World Series. The Diamondbacks sent a lineup to Surprise that included four members of their Game 5 starting lineup, including leadoff hitter Ketel Marte and NL Rookie of the Year Corbin Carroll.

The homer, by Blaze Alexander, was a perfect example of that. Alexander took a big swing at a first-pitch fastball but missed. Bradford came back with a hanging changeup. Alexander clobbered it.Despite all of that, Bradford also showed why the Rangers like him. He competes. Without the changeup, he still managed to pitch the expected five innings and did it on just 69 pitches. He could have started a sixth.
