Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher says 'there's nothing wrong with what we're doing' after a 5-7 season.COLLEGE STATION — Jimbo Fisher uttered seven words on Saturday night that should make Texas A&M fans shudder.
It’s one more reason Fisher, who has appeared more frazzled and skittish than usual over the past year, was summoned to hire a true offensive coordinator who could take over play-calling duties and allow Fisher to focus on the bigger picture — trying to win an SEC West title for the first time since A&M joined the powerful league a decade ago.
Things were looking up for A&M under Fisher — all the way until they weren’t with last season’s 8-4 finish followed by this year’s 5-7 mark that left the Aggies out of the bowl picture for the first time since 2008. Both teams started the season ranked sixth before their respective freefalls. The Aggies were hit this year with a whopping amount of injuries — Fisher said he chalked them up to plain bad luck and nothing to do with the approach of a new strength and conditioning coach — and he played most of the freshmen in A&M’s top-rated 2022 recruiting class.
He’s become a punchline, too, among some of his peers, based in part on his off-rails rant directed at Alabama’s Nick Saban in May over Saban’s baseless name, image and likeness comments directed at A&M — the game’s most iconic coach said the Aggies paid for their entire No. 1 class of 2022.
