WASHINGTON—.locked in a down-to-the-wire raceThe senator is challenging a federal $250,000 cap on the reimbursement of a candidate’s personal loans with money his or her campaign receives after the election.
The Justice Department, representing the Federal Election Commission, argued the government had legitimate anticorruption interests in limiting the ability of candidates to be repaid with money that donors contribute to a political campaign after they know an election’s outcome. Department lawyer Malcolm Stewart also argued that Mr.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh suggested that separate government limits on how much money individual donors can give to a campaign, set at $2,900, were enough to address corruption concerns. “Why isn’t the $2,900 limit that applies sufficient?” he asked. The court’s three liberal justices all said the loan-repayment limits appeared to make sense, allowing candidates to be reimbursed to some extent with after-the-fact contributions, but not so much that donors could have corrupting influence in helping to retire very large personal loans.
how is this allowed
'A candidate facing the prospect of not being fully reimbursed will think twice about pouring more money into the campaign' ... That's the argument being offered in FAVOR of removing the limits. Unbelievable.
Surprised that Ted would do something so shady.
Come on Supreme Court, get this one right!
