SOUTH COUNTY — Sweetwater Union High School District principals and vice principals have established a union, officials announced last week, becoming the third such union for school administrators in the county.
The union will join an umbrella organization, United Administrators Southern California, that includes unions at San Diego Unified and Chula Vista Elementary. San Diego Unified’s union, formed in 2009, represents about 600 principals, vice principals and other managers; Chula Vista Elementary’s, formed two years ago, represents about 50 principals and vice principals.
Members of the new union hope to, among other things, improve benefits, establish reassignment protections and formalize processes for hiring and interviewing, said Carlotta Love, assistant principal at Chula Vista High School and another union organizer. The umbrella organization United Administrators Southern California helped the Sweetwater union organize.
