The Supreme Court suggests a 40-foot cross on public land in Maryland built to honor World War I soldiers does not violate the separation of church and state

Several of the justices pointed to the fact that the cross in question has stood for nearly a hundred years in a Maryland suburb, in a park close to other war memorials.Supreme Court to decide fate of WWI memorial cross in church and state disputeJustice Elena Kagan noted that after World War I, crosses"became, in people's minds, the preeminent symbol of how to memorialize World War I dead.

They lost when a district court upheld the cross. But in 2017, a panel of judges on the 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 to reverse the decision, saying that the government had"excessively entangled itself with religion."In court, Monica L. Miller, a lawyer for the American Humanist Society representing the men, argued the memorial should either be moved to private property or modified.

It is ridiculous that the AHA associates the cross with the same meaning as Confederate war memorials and statues.

How horrible it must be for these left dems to run around looking for things to be pissed off at.

Excellent!!!🇺🇸👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Better this than the border wall.

Awesome!!!

Who filed the suit? May be the cross offends some people?

See that word “of”? It doesn’t say “from”. There’s a difference. Words matter

That is good news. Poor liberal nut jobs that are against this

Time we attack these atheists as they have done to us. When your belief system is forced on others then it is criminal. How this cross forces these losers to anything but driving by is the real question. The majority not minority must rule if a Republic to stand.

PRAISE GOD,SANITY

We had to even debate it? So dumb. 5700 died for everyday of that war.

Thank GOD

No it represents the vast majority of religious belief in this country during WWI. If we were primarily Jewish? It would be a 6 pointed star. we need 2 stop fighting windmills & focus on things that matter!

But this is NOT ok? Hmmmm....

Too much evil in this world including the FakeNews EnemyOfTheState SheepNoMore WWG1WGA

You people need a life, wtf do these idiots do all day, it's really sad that people can't respect a monument dedicated to our military, should have known east coast, seems like the west coast and east coast have an abundance of butthurt liberals offended by their own shadow s

The Establishment Clause pertains to CONGRESS. duh ReadABook FakeNews

This is more of a war memorial and almost 100 yrs old. Surely you can look beyond religion on this one.

It’s like the 25th of December.. Both sides call it Christmas, but one celebes the birth of a baby and the other the gifts brought by a guy in a sleigh...

Finally somebody is not crazy

The people that whine and cry about stuff like this need to get a life.

We will see if they same applies to other religious symbols.

Yeah

It absolutely completely does. Unless you want to build a 40 foot Star of David next to it, along with every other religious symbol held by WWI soldiers.

CNN hates memorials to the dead, and is a cold evil corp.

Cool beans

👍🏻

God will prevail! Bye, bye atheists and devil worshippers!!!

Praise God from whom all blessings flow

No shit! Brilliant discussion. Should we remove crosses at all military cemeteries? Soooo stupid!!

I'm offended by the Fact that it only honors Christians from World War I NOT that its a cross on public land.

Great fk the atheist

What's next? Lets give the person in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier a gender? Damn this shit is getting old.

God dammit

It's laying claim to a particular Religion on state property, which is DEFINITIVELY a violation of separation of Church & State.

HOW does this not violate church and state? a cross is not the only symbol of respect for the dead, I'm sure not all those soldiers lost were christian/catholic, as the family of a jewish/muslim/buddhist/whatever fallen solder I would not be happy with this.

This is good news!

Miracle Alert...Some good old common sense...from the Twats at CNN😁

Yeah

If that cross goes down, our country goes with it.

As long as the goal is to honor (not proselytize) and statues involving other religions are permitted, can't see the harm. It's part of the diversity of mankind.

I hope their suggestion bears out to be their decision in June and this cross and others like it remain undisturbed. People need to stop trying to tear down history or make the majority bow to their desires. Leave it be.

Cross is so overrated

It’s hilarious to watch a bunch of Christians claim that a Christian cross built to honor Christians is not Christian.

Great! Because Arlington cemetery has many that may offend people! never-forget KIA respect honor

Well, it's not like it's a 50-foot cross. That might be a problem. (Sarcasm intended.)

It does

Great! Common sense rules the day!

Because it doesn't

Well seeing as probably 95+% of the soldiers were Christians I don’t see the problem

Cohen's Two Points: 1. He has no evidence that Trump or his campaign colluded with Russia, 2. He was never instructed to lie to congress by Trump.

Why a cross though? Undoubtedly some of those soldiers weren't Christian nor believers in any god. How does a cross honor them? It's clearly overtly religious.

I think us liberals need a vacation

Unreal. This world is Fup

... and CNN is very sad about it. Sorry ...

Yes!!!!!

What would people with different religion, like the Jews, who also serve in WW1, feel about this?

God forbid a country built upon the foundation of separating religion and government should recognize that a towering religious symbol on government-owned land violates that foundation. But whatever, I guess.

Yes it does.

It may not but what it is doing is dishonoring people of different religions than Christianity who also died from this country.

I’m as atheist as the day is long, and even I don’t care about this one.

Ohh, Ohhh, Ohhhh OZEMPIC!!

Dear ChurchofSatan, please build something at the same time since fair is fair.

Good grief, why are crosses still a thing? Haven’t we smartened up from religion yet News flash to the “faith over facts” crowd, that little voice in your head is not god, it’s you!

Why is this even news? It can be looked at as just an honor for WW1 vets, not a cross. What’s the biggest issue of something right now that violates Church & state?

A war memorial isnt the same as a random religious symbol. I can't be mad about this one.

The cross is a pagan symbol. So, you're good to go . . .

Everyone’s a god damn snow flake.

That's silly, why would it violate church and state?

Strange considering it obviously does I now demand a satanist memorial for WW1 soldiers

Imagine being offended by a giant rock. Can’t relate

Should it be taken down? Emotionally I would leave the cross, legally it should be moved. Were any of the 49 soldiers members of any other religion? If not, then the answer is it does not entangle itself in religion. who is offended by this one?

Supreme Court seems to seek narrow way to uphold cross that memorializes war deadIs the Bladensburg Peace Cross unconstitutional or a secular honor to World War I heroes? It's shameful that liberals want to tear down monuments celebrating dead veterans. They will start with Robert E Lee, then come for Washington and Jefferson and will eventually tear down Arlington. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, OR PROHIBITING THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. 1A (2/2). Congress published copies of Jefferson's Bible for first time in 1904. Since, Bibles have been used customarily as gifts for recently sworn-in members of Congress. Aside from its nature as a philosophical text, Bibles have provided useful insight into mind of Jefferson.

Supreme Court To Decide Fate Of World War I Memorial Cross On Public LandThe American Humanist Association is challenging the existence of a 40-foot cross on government-owned land, but the Trump administration hopes a newly conservative majority on the Supreme Court will agree to let it stand. Other than a partisan decision, I'm not really sure what the legal basis for letting it stand would be. These artifacts are illegal under the current laws. Waste of time money & energy. Fix healthcare instead.

Supreme Court to decide if giant cross is religious symbol or secular memorial to war deadThe case raises a question that has vexed the justices for decades: What is the proper place for religion in American public life? That is a WWI memorial. Anyone that wants to destroy those memorials has a true hatred for those who served. Religion has shown itself to be full of corruption, full of lies and full of duplicity. Religion has no place in our world. The only people who have a right to decide the memorial are the families whose loved ones are being remembered.

Supreme Court will look at whether a cross is promotion of religion or war memorialThe Supreme Court, long divided on the role of religion, is set to decide whether a 40-foot Latin cross in Maryland is an unconstitutional official endorsement of Christianity or a historic memorial for local soldiers who died in World War I. How can an agreed upon religious symbol memorialize people who did not believe in or agree with that symbol. It's as insulting as Mormons 'saving' dead people by declaring them Mormons in the afterlife. Magical Thinking is Magical Thinking is MAGICAL THINKING.
