'For Indian people, their land is really important and treaties are really important. They're sacred,' says law dean Kevin Washburn, who is part of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma. 'And this reaffirms the sacredness of those promises and those treaties.'

The decision was 5-4, with Justices Gorsuch, Sonia Sotomayor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan and Stephen Breyer in the majority, while Justices John Roberts, Brett Kavanaugh, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas dissented. In a dissenting opinion, Roberts, the chief justice, wrote that the decision"will undermine numerous convictions obtained by the State, as well as the State's ability to prosecute serious crimes committed in the future," and"may destabilize the governance of vast swathes of Oklahoma.

"Now and then there's a great case that helps you keep the faith about the rule of law," he said."And this is one of those." Then there's the issue of past decisions — many of them are now considered wrongful convictions because the state lacked jurisdiction. A number of criminal defendants who have been convicted in the past will now have grounds to challenge their convictions, arguing that the state never had jurisdiction to try them., concerned Jimcy McGirt, an enrolled member of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma who was convicted of sex crimes against a child on Creek land.

Give them back their lands stolen in Georgia (trail of tears)

All I got to say is black.wall street and aniyunwiya ppl that built that. Smh African Americans ain't African 💯

Plenty more land we can & should give back too!

When does the wall go up

Great!

Remember this? That was something, wasn't it?

I remember speaking to an Indian elder once. I asked if the term 'Indian' or 'Native American' was more preferable. He laughed and said 'Only bigoted American leftists concern themselves with such small things, and we prefer the term 'Indian'

Great. Sounds like a great place to escape overreaching federal and state government. Good for them. No commie limousine liberals need apply.

What’s India got to do with all this?

Sifill_LDF This is how it should be

So amazing. My ancestry traces through there. I wonder if the far-right and alt-right and trump-right rhetoric will disparage this decision, saying, 'Look, they're taking away our land. The Left is taking away everything! The sky is falling!' Oh, the weird and sad irony.

As long as the water flows and the grass grow green. Treaty language.

This is great news, long awaited. This will mean the Indigenous people will know sovereignty and will be able to protect their people more and better. 🎉🎊🥳

My only beef with Native cultures is that everything is 'sacred'. They, like Republicans try to use religion as a weapon. I'm not buying. These treaties aren't sacred. They're legal documents - which were rightly upheld today.

So, we're back to calling them Indians? Make up your minds.

SCotUS got this one right. US and Canada both need to do better by our Indigenous partner-nations.

Now that all the oil is gone

Indigenous, but yeah it's pretty sacred.
