That’s because many teachers have allegedly been locked out of their school accounts, according toIn their emails, Savado included a breakdown of what the union dispute means for the future of their class and how students can get take-home lunches if they need one.

Savado said the fallout Chicago schools are seeing is just the latest example of school officials not listening to young people or considering their needs. “I feel like adults are constantly leaving young people out of conversations,” they said. “I haven’t sat through a whole school year since sixth grade. It’s been really hard, especially as a freshman.”

They added that things started calming down in the summer when COVID-19 cases were trending downward. Now, she feels trapped again. “I feel like the pandemic has taken a toll on how I operate,” they said. Sometimes, Savado will meet with a trusted counselor or go to a teacher’s classroom when she needs a breather, to draw or talk things out. But, when schools shut down — for any reason — she loses that safe space. “I felt like I was losing my emotional support.”
