Stitching Sisters Ohio has been making quilts for cancer patients at the James for more than 20 years tate University Wexner Medical Center, patients were too cold. So she and a few other patients who knew how to quilt worked together to make lap quilts for fellow patients.
Volunteers come from all walks of life from cancer survivors, retired nurses, or having a relative who battled cancer. Joanne calls the volunteers her silent army. “I would take a kit with me, we'd take all my pins and we would pin the pieces up," she said. "The curtain that separated us from the other person getting their infusions or chemo and we got a chance to talk. She got a chance to to touch something and kind of get away from the, from the purpose, she was there for and, and knew that she was going to help somebody else who was in their own battle with cancer.
Nearly 38,000 quilts have been donated to outpatients receiving chemotherapy at the OSU Wexner Medical Center, each making a lasting impact and covering patients with love and comfort.Liz Plageman puts many of the kits together that go out to quilters across the region. She said this is her passion and she loves working with the other volunteers.
