The TokyoOlympics will be held under a state of emergency.

Tokyo cited 920 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, and the more-transmissible Delta variant is responsible for up to 30 percent of cases, said Yasutoshi Nishimura, a Japanese politician in charge of the nation's pandemic response, per CNN."The number of infected cases in the area including Tokyo has been increasing since the end of last month," Suga said.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said,"we'll support any measure which is necessary to have a safe and secure Olympic and Paralympic Games for the Japanese people and all the participants," according to. It's unclear at this time if the state of emergency will be extended for the duration of the Paralympics, which begin August 24.
