Now, this is a cool story. 🚀

The ashes of the late actor Nichelle Nichols, who played Lt. Nyota Uhura in the original “Star Trek” television series, will launch into space this year on an Alabama rocket.

Now, Nichols’ ashes, along with those of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, fellow series actor James “Scotty” Doohan and others will ride to a permanent place in space aboard an ironically named Vulcan rocket built in Decatur. United Launch Alliance workers build the Vulcan in a sprawling plant on the Tennessee River in Decatur. The rockets are put on barges and shipped down the Mississippi river to the Gulf of Mexico and ultimately Kennedy Space Center on Florida’s Space Coast.

“They were very close family friends as well,” her son said. “He had kids and there were always birthday and holidays and those kinds of things. They were day to day working partners, and that’s another association. I think fondly of Alabama and Huntsville in that regard.”
