Spurs set for another summertime Springfield takeover

Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich looks at the scoreboard during the second half of Saturday night’s game in Salt Lake City.For years, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich kindly encouraged those at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame to leave his name out of it.

Having finally acquiesced to the Hall’s call this year, Popovich’s worst fear appears to have come true. Joining them is Spanish center Pau Gasol, whose time in the NBA is most closely associated with Memphis and the Los Angeles Lakers but who played three seasons with the Spurs near the end of his career.

“If you’ve got to go into the Hall of Fame with Dirk, you’re not worthy,” Popovich said, referring to the Mavericks star generally regarded as the greatest international player of all time. “He’s worthy, I’m not. The Hall of Fame is for people like Dirk. Not me.”Popovich’s 1,363 career victories rank first on the NBA’s all-time charts. He guided the Spurs to championships in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014.

Hammon became an NBA trailblazer when Popovich made her the league’s first full-time female assistant in 2014. She won a WNBA championship last season, her first as head coach of the Las Vegas Aces. Gasol was the NBA’s Rookie of the Year in 2001-02 with Memphis, and went on to win a pair of championships alongside Kobe Bryant with the Lakers.
