As Spurs’ season winds down, Gregg Popovich speculation ramps up

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, right, speaking with guard Tre Jones, has emphasized all year how important teaching is for a coach during a rebuilding year.SAN ANTONIO — The Spurs’ locker room was pin-drop quiet at halftime when coach Gregg Popovich stalked through the door.

“There are those nights when I say. ‘What the hell am I doing here?’ ” Popovich acknowledged. “ ‘Do I need to do this?’ ”At age 74, Popovich is the oldest coach in the history of the NBA. He has accomplished all anyone could have hoped to accomplish in his 27 seasons, winning more games than any coach in league annals , five NBA championships and guiding Team USA to an Olympic gold medal to boot.

“I see his energy every day, how much he loves coming in and going through film sessions with us, going through practices,” forward Doug McDermott said. “He seems like he's 55 to me. He doesn’t seem like he’s 70 or whatever it is.”They are 19-56 heading into Wednesday’s game against the Jazz. With seven games remaining, the Spurs are threatening the 20-win 1996-97 club as the most futile in franchise history.

Of Popovich’s 757 career losses, more than a third of them — 251 — have come in the past six seasons.
