INDIANAPOLIS — Spurs rookie Blake Wesley got off the team plane Thursday afternoon in Indiana and felt the crisp air on his face.Wesley grew up 2½ hours north of Indianapolis in South Bend, Ind. After starring at Riley High School and going on to one standout season at Notre Dame, Wesley did not relocate from South Bend until the Spurs made him the 25th pick in the NBA draft in June.
It is also the site of the high school state tournament. Wesley never got Riley High to that pinnacle in his time there, but he did play a game at Gainbridge last season at Notre Dame.Wesley wasn’t the only former Indianan back in his home state Friday. Wesley and fellow first-round rookie Malaki Branham did not play in the Spurs’ season-opening loss to Charlotte on Wednesday. It would not be surprising to see Wesley log time with the Spurs’ G League affiliate in Austin, which begins training camp Monday.McDermott OKThe night before the Spurs opened against Charlotte, the 30-year-old McDermott made sure to note the moment.
“I’m trying to be a role model, on the court and off,” he said. “Just trying to show the way — eating right, getting sleep and just really playing unselfish, playing the right way and playing hard.”“So many ups and downs along the journey, and you just have got to really appreciate it,” McDermott said. “You never know how long it will last. I am at the stage of my career where I am just trying to appreciate every day.
