.Mr. Litton won a one-year term with 52% of the vote to 47% for Mr. Stone.Mr. Litton, the favorite candidate of many young and nonwhite Southern Baptists, argued in the lead-up to the election that Southern Baptists needed to step back from their role in partisan politics. The SBC has long been a force within the Republican Party, but Mr. Litton argued that this association was turning some people away from the convention. He has emphasized the need to build a more racially diverse denomination. Though the SBC has been growing more diverse for decades, some 90% of its members are white.

“We need our brothers in the African-American community, our sisters—we need them to be able to reach this nation,” Mr. Litton said before the election. “I am concerned about that.” Read more: The Wall Street Journal »

That is pretty shocking news, but surely Litton is not as moderate as the ones who were kicked out or left the SBC 25-30 years ago.
