Alabama pastor Ed Litton was elected the next president of the Southern Baptist Convention on Tuesday, a victory for the more moderate forces within the country’s largest evangelical Christian denomination.
Mr. Litton defeated Mike Stone, a Georgia pastor, in a tightly contested runoff that was in many ways a proxy for how actively the SBCMr. Litton, the favorite candidate of many young and nonwhite Southern Baptists, argued in the lead-up to the election that Southern Baptists needed to step back from their role in partisan politics. The SBC has long been a force within the Republican Party, but Mr. Litton argued that this association was turning some people away from the convention.
“We need our brothers in the African-American community, our sisters—we need them to be able to reach this nation,” Mr. Litton said before the election. “I am concerned about that.”
That is pretty shocking news, but surely Litton is not as moderate as the ones who were kicked out or left the SBC 25-30 years ago. In other words, I doubt the pendulum is swinging back toward the day when SBC seminaries were known for critical thinking and intellectual curiosity
