'I'm exhorting everybody in this community to continue to shelter in place,' Mayor Kelly Girtz of Athens-Clarke County said.

Several mayors throughout Georgia expressed shock and frustration after Governor Brian Kemp announced that a range of businesses would be allowed to re-open across the southern state on Friday amid the coronavirus pandemic.

But many local leaders across Georgia suggested they were blindsided by Kemp's announcement, with some calling the decision"reckless" and"irresponsible" as they urged residents under their jurisdictions to continue sheltering in place.
