The share of adults reporting symptoms of anxiety or depression ballooned during the pandemic. Should you talk about your mental-health struggle with your boss?

AUTHOR WSJ Noted. Published Sept. 14, 2020 2:34 pm ET The share of adults reporting symptoms of anxiety or depression ballooned during the pandemic, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, rising to 40.9% by mid-July. That compares with a similar national survey from the first half of 2019 which put that number at 11%.

KEY TAKEAWAYS 1. Feel out the company’s culture. .bfcOAU{color:rgb;font-size:16px;font-family:Exchange;font-weight:normal;font-style:italic;line-height:22px;}/*!sc*/ data-styled.g1[id="sc-AxjAm"]{content:"bfcOAU,"}/*!sc*/ .hSWtRc{background-color:white;padding:30px;box-shadow:0px 3px 7px -4px rgba;border-radius:5px;}/*!sc*/ data-styled.g2[id="sc-AxirZ"]{content:"hSWtRc,"}/*!sc*/ .eDRRSL.eDRRSL.

2. Think about who you should speak to. If you have a manager who has talked about his or her own mental health, or who has been vulnerable about other less-than-perfect aspects of life, that could be a sign of empathy, Greenwood says. If not, it might be best to start with a human-resources contact.

3. You don’t have to share everything and you can be vague. “You should only tell if you really need to tell,” says Sharona Hoffman, a professor of law and bioethics at Case Western Reserve University’s School of Law. “Don’t volunteer information they don’t need. Do ask for help you absolutely need.” Harvard psychologist Jill Hooley recommends her patients tell their boss they are dealing with a medical issue if they need time off to address a mental-health problem.

4. Be clear and prepared to offer solutions. If you need time to work on your mental health, you could, for example, ask to start late one day a week so you can fit in a tele-health therapy session in the morning. No They’re not there to help just make profit, and they’re not trained which could make people worse.

No.

Should be the other way around.... should your boss discuss his/her mental health issues with the staff?

Sure let him know how weak and vulnerable your feeling.

No. Your boss really won’t give a crap. Remember, no one is indispensable.

Talk to your doctor first and get it in writing.

No.

No

Not a wise choice at my former employer.

Software hack in MI gave 6000 Trump votes to Biden in one district. There are 47 districts so potentially 300 k Trump votes went to Biden. Sounds like a software hack. THIRTY STATES USE THE SAME SOFTWARE ! Feel better now?

Your boss could also be going through for the same situation. In this moments there are no hierarchy. We are all passengers of the same class on the same boat.

No. It is your own burden to bear. Everyone struggles in life and your sharing your pain adds to the burden of others.

A lot of people dropping out of calls this week including the kids' teachers, but it's still supposedly business as usual. Weird that no one acknowledges that anything is out of the ordinary.

Mental health does not exist. We just have people who don't want to overcome their toxic human relationships filled with fear, anxiety, sensitivities, jealousy, pride, sin, importantly UNFORGIVENESS, toxic attitudes - all the way from childhood.

I don’t care how welcoming it seems, I would not. There is too much going on and I am sure they are under enough pressure. I recommend seeking a therapist if you must discuss your issues. You would be helping the economy and getting a professional evaluation.

Who's talking to the kids? The ones who are old enough to become aware of a situation, which even their parents can't comprehend? Or, parents who say they do it in vicious, heated rhetoric? What a hellish place to be for a kid.

You have to 'feel the company'. I know cases where that was beneficial :)

ELECTION VOTER FRAUD

Lol you think companies care about your mental health? They only care about the services you provide and the money you bring in. America is one giant corporation and that won’t change ever.

Sure. If you have a really awesome boss that cares about you more than his bottom line. But since that's extremely rare, it's probably best to keep your mouth shut lest you want a big, red target on your back.

Bosses are not psychologists.

Great idea to lose your job

what about Trump? He's the problem.

How many people could approach that conversation feeling like their boss would legitimately care and be willing to facilitate chance to ensure the happiness of the employee? 🤔

I DONT BELIEVE PEOPLE ARE THAT WEAK ! It’s easy to get depressed but one must NEVER SWEAT THE BS !

nice

😭😭😭😭

Maybe they’ll understand what we go through now

She doesn’t care

No, they will find a way to fire you 'without violating ADA' and good luck to you paying for legal costs and being forced into biased arbitration per your employment contract. HR is not your friend, neither is your employer.

It's important to know the distance. Sometimes we are more like friends, sometimes just a coworkers. 🤔🌐 work remotework COVID19 mentalhealth selfcare

No.

Nope. Frame it as a medical issue, don’t disclose what it is. This goes for some other health issues too that society sees as all in your head-autoimmune, pain issues, migraines. It’s infuriating, but true.

Plz everybody,DO NOT let Trump fool U by showing crowd of people. Is there any evidence that these people R from same state?we cannot tell.Trump said recently, people R following me everywhere. He is master manipulator&liae on facts. His puppets can easily transports people anywhere

You can vent some of your Covid Frustrations with a poem I wrote called “The New Coronavirus Blues.” …You can see it in a book I wrote called “Crazy Robert’s More Great Poems and Potential Song Lyrics” that you can download for a dollar on Amazon at

Anything you say can and will be used against you.

Yes. Of course! I feel for all of you that can’t talk openly about mental health in your workplace. That is not a place I would want to work.

I’m a wreck.

Who hasn’t?

No u shouldn’t. Works not the place for struggle sessions.

If you wanna get fired. Maybe now (since its a clinical condition ) you can get a good deal. Good question.

Hell no. Next question.

If he is a good friend. But a professional would probably be best

No!!!

“Happiness, not in another place but this place...not in another hour, but this hour.” -Walt Whitman (not a commentary on Walt Whitman)

Psychotherapist here. Mental health is health. If you’re seeing a podiatrist or a psychiatrist, your boss doesn’t need to know why or what, but that you have a clinical issue you’re addressing. If you have mental health issues and you’re not getting care for it, that’s different

No.

No because the boss is probably the source of that anxiety and depression.

No.

Absolutely not.

Me: Hello, boss. I have anxiety and depression. Can you give me paid leave? Boss: lol, that’s a good one. Get back to work. Me: k, byeee

Nope

Sadly, not if you want to remain employed
