A 67-year-old man accused of stealing sections of the Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have a Dream” memorial in Denver’s City Park has been arrested, according to city jail records.

Vandalism on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. monument in City Park Denver on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024. Vandals stole a bronze panel depicting Black Americans who fought in U.S. wars and two decorative bronze emblems, one next to an engraving of the monument’s title. Herman Duran was arrested on suspicion of theft and criminal mischief on March 10 and is in custody at the Downtown Detention Center on a $5,000 bail, according to the city’s jail log.

The theft was reported on Feb. 21 by parks maintenance workers, who discovered a bronze panel, torch and angel were removed from the memorial., along with stolen bronze pieces from the Joseph Addison Thatcher memorial fountain, after they were sold as scrap metal to a local business, according to the Denver Police Department.
