1 in 5 American children struggles with anxiety. To help students cope, more schools are turning to mindfulness programs designed to promote breathing and mental exercises. The explosion of interest in the practice has some researchers advising caution.

experience at least one serious stressor at home — like divorce, poverty or a parent's addiction — according to the nonprofit Child Trends.

Mindfulness is a bit of a catch-all term for a secularized version of practices that draw from religions like Buddhism and Hinduism. It might include things like focusing on the senses, deep, regular breathing and mental exercises designed to promote awareness and kindness.

They practice this in TO schools. 15 min/day. There are videos book on YouTube. Sometime it’s a school wide thing where all classes stop to do it or the principal leads it over the PA. There’s also a book schools were given “The MindUp Curriculum” by the (Goldie) Hawn Foundation.

BennettDBennett This was my path in graduate school, in early 2000's it was seen as 'mind control' and I chickened out. This work is amazing and I can't wait until it's everywhere! 💚💚

And then they go out into the real world and lose their shit because they can’t cope. Decades of participation trophies and protecting feelings has made kids of today weak minded snowflakes. Toughen up already! Life isn’t always fair, and no not everyone is equal!

I’m thinking of the heartbreaking video of the 6 year old girl in Orlando whose hands were cuffed behind her back and put in a police car. Her trauma will probably last a lifetime. She could have benefited from a program like this.

I can’t stop tweeting this ironically

Now all they have to do is adopt some STEM programs. lol

My anxiety and depression manifested in Kindergarten. It was so hard on my family. This would have been an amazing tool for me to manage something I couldn't even begin to define.

More bull shit in a world needing self determination.

I don't remember ever being offered a pathway to channel my emotions as a teenager. Introducing even the smallest method of dealing with anger non-violently and also normalizing that it's ok and expected to be angry/sad/frustrated - this would have benefited me immensely!

This is what happenes when 'fine arts', 'arts and crafts' and 'shop classes' get removed from the curriculum.

Who would’ve thought mental health was important!? 🤦‍♂️

I am a history teacher who is currently teaching theatre and improv. My students love the activities & space that allows them relax, enjoy, de-stress.

As a music and theatre teacher I did this with students 20 plus years ago. They liked it. Often they would walk into music class and ask for that “relaxation thing.”

If it works, do it!

this is excellent

Last year was my 1st year teaching. 5 of my 20 students had diagnosed anxiety disorders (5 different kinds). They were six years old. 😢

Obviously if you just let kids play in class, they're not going to act up as much as if they have to learn.

Some schools use mindfulness, other schools should be able to use the Bible. Yoga and all that are Eastern religions. Stop the discrimination against Christianity. We have data too.

Awesome

5 in 5 American school children have to perform active shooter drills because their government is failing them.

I’ve been thinking a lot about mental health lately after seeing a recent stat suggesting almost half (42%) of American adults are obese. I imagine the trash we feed our children along w/ the lack of physical activities/exercise are major factors in poor physical & mental health.

The soul, body, and spirit may not be linked to each other due to the rapid development of the Internet.

Struggle with anxiety sounds a lot like struggling with math. ... checks notes I’m pretty sure the transitive law means that anxiety causes math.

Maybe its because people tell them they are going to be shot at school.

At first glance I thought those were little Coronavirus

Just give em some fuckin xanax like they did in the Bible

So it helped the teachers?

I LOVE this so much!

I have studied the impact of mindfulness and deep breathing in elementary age kids, and it does seem to reduce behavior infractions and “trips to the office.” I wonder if mindfulness is equally impacting teachers and they are more relaxed in their need to discipline?

Just like later start times, it all points to something very practical and most useful, but unfortunately when things make sense in schools...

My son’s elementary class does yoga

I love that this is taking place in a “high-poverty” school. I admit, when I read the headline, I immediately thought of Peabody or MBA. Why is that? Happy to be mistaken. These are coping skills that will stay with these kids 👍🏻

It's really just teaching kids self awareness and emotional intelligence. Soft skills are important and something employers do look at, especially when considering someone for a promotion.

Wow!

Stress & Pressure Has Increased While Do Yoga.... Keep It Up & Do Yoga Regularly

This is wonderful! We did an article on a group in Eagle County Colorado - UB.U the promotes Mindfulness. Meditation. Mental Health.

Something I could get behind

Stress and pressure has increased on students over the years. ACT, testing. TCAPs, Volunteer hours, BETA, NHS, GPA, Scholarships. .....

Great idea! It has really helped me.

And then they go home to their dysfunctional families and repeat the anxiety process all over again

Waiting for the religious nutjobs to freak out about the yoga part, claiming that the schools are indoctrinating their kids with Islam. Just wait....

More physical activity for all ages helps with mental well being 👍 I hope schools realize this and maintain their phys ed and recess (non computer) periods.

these are SO needed and welcomed. I've even seen it work wonders for preschoolers. We live in hugely hectic times. I don't think we adults recognize this enough. Kids need time to THINK..and Just BE. We don't give them that much anymore. Breathing helps your core and voice too

Fantastic. I wish they would do this everywhere.

Could it be the active shooter drills? Mass shootings? Curious 🤷‍♀️

Really wish they made this mandatory in schools would’ve helped me a ton for sure

we can't control others but we can control how we react to them...

The whole country, and world, will be less anxious when we have PresidentElizabethWarren in the WH. VoteWarren WinWithWarren She fights for all of us.

The anxiety is being caused by the lies they are being taught.

Don’t tell kids they will have to repeat their grade if they do poorly on the standardized tests. Two a year! Stop telling them they won’t be able to handle the next grade.

How about we don't dump adult problems on children?

I can imagine if some teachers wouldn’t want to lead breathing excercises. Meditation at the end of PE. The teachers will be able to notice when the kids get back from PE how beneficial meditation is to the students’ focus and behavior.

Shouldn’t the question be: why are so many kids experiencing anxiety? This was not a thing when I was a kid.

Good to see skools finally addressing the problem. Plenty of professionals available to help get started! As long as you're looking, check in with Montessori.

How about looking at the dietary guidelines. We are practically force feeding our kids carbs when keto diets have been shown to decrease anxiety.

But practise doesn:t.....

hmmm just looks like the public sector is looking to get more money in the teachers unions hands.

Hmmmm maybe if teachers/professors didn’t tell students the world is going to end in 5 years and that “nazis” want to kill them they wouldn’t be so anxious.

Meet those parents first!... You will immediately understand the problem.

You have to train kids when they’re very young. Don’t just tranquilize them. Gradually extinct the anxiety stimulus.

unless you're 6 and a black girl, then you get arrested
