) - A warning has gone out to Foley residents this week about a fraud scheme that’s using artificial intelligence to attempt to scam you out of your money. Foley Police said the scammers are using AI technology to clone voices of public officials on the other end of the phone.
Carnley knows how tricky AI can be to catch. He said his voice has been cloned to try and scam residents out of money in recent days. It’s not just him. Foley Police Chief, Thurston Bullock and Fire Chief Joey Darby have also had their voices replicated according to investigators. The recent reports prompted Foley Police to post a warning on their Facebook page. Those reporting the incidents claim to have heard the voices of these public safety officials demanding payment for warrants or accusing them of specific crimes.
“We’re never going to call and ask for money. The only time you’ll see us soliciting funds is for a specified fundraiser. We do that from time to time. It’s very specific to an organization,” said Darby.
