In dual-language programs, competitive and super-motivated by prior defeats, they’ll be in El Paso to face kids from across the United States.

Nathan Martinez has always been on the shy side, but the eighth-grader becomes a different version of himself when he competes. Now he’s one of three San Antonio students heading to El Paso for the National Spanish Spelling Bee. The annual event celebrates bilingual education and, like any spelling bee, fosters self-confidence, public speaking skills and poise under pressure. Nathan, 14, has that poise.

It was an easy word, Nathan said, but he doubted himself in the moment and slipped up.
