This event, steeped in tradition and folklore, offers both astronomers and casual observers alike a captivating glimpse into the beauty of our night skies. The Strawberry Moon is a term given to the full moon that occurs in June. Its name originates from Indigenous peoples in North America who marked the beginning of strawberry season with the arrival of this full moon. The Algonquin tribes, in particular, used this name as a way to keep track of the changing seasons.
According to NASA, the old European name for the June full moon is Mead or Honey Moon. The word "honeymoon" may be connected to this full moon due to the custom of couples marrying in June. The Strawberry Moon is the first full moon of the summer, which this year coincides with the summer solstice.," said News 4 meteorologist Jeannette Calle. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the name came from the Native American Algonquian tribe from the northwestern U.S. to mark the wild strawberry harvest season. Unfortunately the Strawberry Moon will not appear red or pink instead a shade of gold. This year, the Strawberry Moon will start rising around 9 p.m.
