Southwest News

Afternoon highs in San Antonio will be about five degrees warmer than normal, and with the added humidity, it will feel like 104 to 109 degrees.

The typical South Texas summertime pattern will settle in across the region for the rest of the week and beyond. The rain-free skies and rising heat come courtesy of an upper-level ridge, an elongated area of high atmospheric pressure, found just west of the Lone Star State near the Four Corners part of the desert Southwest . This high pressure system will remain in the vicinity for the next week, resulting in above-normal temperatures and minimal chances of rain in the region.

What goes into naming a storm like Alberto? Is your name next? Moisture-rich air will be trapped under the high pressure system, leading to dangerous heat index values, or “feels like” temperatures that account for humidity’s effect on the body. Humid air makes it much harder for sweat to evaporate from your skin, which is how your body cools itself down.

What you should watch for if you’re pregnant this summer “The blood vessels in our skin will also dilate in response to the heat, and our body will transfer heat through our blood from the body’s core to the skin as another way to cool off,” Chapa said. “Instinctively, when we become too hot, we will seek to become cooler by finding shade — and as we sweat, we will become thirsty to replenish lost water.
