Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.
You’ll see the John Wick franchise referenced in many of the reviews for “Monkey Man.” I understand the comparison and it’s not entirely inaccurate as both films feature an ample amount of brutal violence and move at a frenetic pace. The Raid films are also highly choreographed, but the presentation is gritty, ugly, and seemingly more realistic. The brutality of the violence hits harder. There’s a grindhouse aspect to The Raid franchise that carries over into “Monkey Man.” If John Wick is haute culture, The Raid and “Monkey Man” are second-hand streetwear with a splash of fast fashion.
The caste system in India is particularly brutal. The distance between the upper class and lower class is a massive divide. It’s not just about money. There are inescapable cultural and religious aspects that stretch back for centuries that dictate an individual’s “place” and “value” within the social structure. “Monkey Man” doesn’t try to explain the minute details. The inequality is simply displayed, and it oozes from the corners of every frame.
