and spoken about your dad’s influence on your career and your path, but did your perspective on your own upbringing change at all once you dove intoLook, I think my relationship was so unique with my dad because my brother and I grew up in a single parent household, and he was the guy that was on our shoulder when I was at school. I was just, Dad’s right there, don’t make that decision. I always felt uniquely close to him. Rest his soul, he’s not around anymore, and now I’m a father.
Being a Black actor playing this role in a period piece and a classic story, how much did you think about that?We definitely had that conversation as well, and I think the place where we got with it was that it is—as long as we made that choice with how Christian moved through the story, with that sincerity and that trust, and we understand it’s not that he doesn’t know the words, it’s just he’s tongue-tied when he’s in love.
Then to be in a room with Will was, to say the least, a little bit intimidating at first, because he was also the person responsible for giving me the job in a lot of ways. He’s a producer on the film, so I’m being hired by an actor in my movie, and so that’s a different experience. I’ve always said, we all go to the bathroom, we all poop. Everybody is human. After a certain while it’s all fine.
